From Cage to Condo: Monk Parakeets in Chicago and Parrots in America. Steve Pruett-Jones will talk about the history and current status of the monk parakeet in Chicago and about parrots generally in the United States. There were previously two native species of parrots in the USA, both of which are now extinct. In contrast, we now have 23 species of introduced naturalized parrots, all now thriving here. Where these species came from, how they survive here, the effects that they are having, and the controversy surrounding them will be the focus of the talk. Steve is a faculty member at the University of Chicago and works both in Australia and North America on the biology and behavior of birds. He has studied the parakeets in Chicago since 1988.  Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. 7:30 pm. Free and open to the public.

PROGRAM: Reporting Rare Birds and What's In it for You

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

NOTE CHANGE OF LOCATION BECAUSE OF ELECTION EVE. THE PROGRAM WILL BE AT THE LEVY CENTER, 300 DODGE AVE IN EVANSTON.

Reporting Rare Birds: How to Do It and What’s in It for You.  Geoff Williamson, Secretary of the Illinois Ornithological Records Committee of Illinois Ornithological Society, asks: If you found a rare bird, would you look forward to or dread documenting it for eBird and for the state rare bird committee? This talk explains what the documentation process is and helps prepare birders for reporting rarities. Along the way it emphasizes not only why you should do it but also how you benefit from doing it. Come learn how you can contribute to the record of bird life in Illinois and improve your birding skills at the same time.

PROGRAM: More Tales from the Crypt

Tuesday, January 24, 2017

More Tales From the Crypt.  The Field Museum’s Josh Engel will tell some of the stories behind the specimens. He’ll talk about the specimens collected by Nathan Leopold—half of the murdering duo Leopold & Loeb—and their connection to the famous murder. He’ll talk about feather-decorated artifacts acquired from indigenous people deep in the Amazon rainforest, and the effort to identify the feathers so that the items can be returned to those people. And he will tell stories of specimens that have come to the museum more recently—like the pelican that was killed by the fish it was trying to eat and the ducks that starved during the deep freeze of 2014. He will also discuss some of the rare birds that have crashed into Chicago’s skyscrapers and how scientists are using the thousands of birds killed by window strikes to shed new light on bird migration and other topics.

PROGRAM: Evolution of Bird Migration

Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Evolution of bird migration: from the Field to the Theory. Valentina Gómez-Bahamón. Every year, massive and periodic movements of birds occur in response to variation in seasonal environments. Migratory birds can travel thousands of kilometers from their breeding grounds towards their wintering grounds, requiring unique physiological and morphological adaptations to accomplish such feats. Partial migration occurs when a species is composed of a migratory population (or subspecies) and a sedentary one. It occurs in many species of birds and it has been suggested as an intermediate step in between the evolution of sedentariness and migratoriness. Focusing on a partially migratory species, the Fork-tail Flycatcher (Tyrannus savanna), Valentina Gómez-Bahamón, who works for SELVA: Research Conservation for the Neotropics and is currently a PhD student at UIC and the Field, will share her field research in the Argentinian Pampas and Colombian Llanos on how morphology differs in association to migration and determining if migration has been lost or gained in the evolutionary history of this group and how it translates into scientific knowledge that can help us understand the evolution of migration and its possible role in the origin of species.
