Don’t miss this opportunity to visit the region’s premier shorebird site. Meet at Sewage Ponds at 7:15 a.m. Directions: From I94, exit at 130th St. Go west about 1/4 mile to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District sign. Turn right on the paved road and proceed to the guard house. Trip ends around 11 a.m. Limit: 20. Sign-up for this trip is required. Bird the less-traveled trails west of Brandenburg Rd. at this beautiful state natural area. Last year the group tallied nearly 70 species. Expect about a 2.5 mile hike (about 3 hours) through old fields, woodlands, prairie, and bogs. Target birds include flycatchers, bluebirds, and late migrants. Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the parking lot at the Visitor Center on Brandenburg Rd., west of Rt. 12. Bring along water and bug repellent. After the hike participants can visit the Visitor Center and bird additional trails. Leader: Margo Milde.

Meet at 7:00 a.m. at approximately 1268 McDaniels Ave. in Highland Park. From Green Bay Rd., turn left on Bob-O-Link Rd. and then left on McDaniels. A sign for Foley Pond is about 100 feet on the right. Park on the street. Trip will last about an hour. Leader: Donnie Dann.

Paul Clyne knows the birds of Jackson Park better than anyone, and in a rare north side appearance, he shares his knowledge and experiences birding this remarkable park on Chicago’s south side. Designed by Fredrick Olmstead as the setting of the 1893 Columbian Exposition, this park consisting of woods, grasslands, and lagoons is one of the great birding locations in the region. And Paul has studied its avian life with meticulous care, amassing detailed notes of his decades of birding here. His insights and anecdotes will provide the perfect tonic for those who can’t wait for the start of spring migration.

The Bird Club’s own Josh Engel, now an international bird tour leader, takes us on a virtual trip to one of his favorite places: Madagascar, rightly called one of the world's best natural history destinations.  Not only are half of all of its birds found nowhere else in the world (some 120 endemic species), but the same goes for every one of its terrestrial mammals, nearly all of its reptiles and amphibians, and a majority of its 10000 plant species.  This illustrated talk will survey the incredible diversity of habitats on the Red Island, from the desert-like spiny forest to the rainforest, focusing in particular on the island's incredible birdlife, spectacular mammals, and bizarre reptiles and amphibians.

Dr. Shannon Hackett, Associate Curator of Birds at the Field Museum, will talk about the exciting new results of the five-year National Science Foundation "Tree of Life" project.   She and her colleagues gathered the largest DNA sequence data set of its kind which they used to investigate the evolutionary relationships of all orders and families of birds.  Come hear how the tree of birds has been shaken.
